Put on your best eyepatch and get ready for a fun and engaging race that traces the steps of some of piracy’s most notable characters. The Ocracoke Island Scallywag 5K/10K/half-marathon is an annual running event on Ocracoke Island that attracts fitness fans of all ages and abilities, and which takes the village by storm via a fun and engaging course that’s close to the shoreline.The “race” is actually a series of three races, which includes a 5K, a 10K, and a half marathon through the village of Ocracoke, and potentially miles beyond. Along the way, runners, walkers and joggers will enjoy stellar views of some of the village’s most notable landmarks, such as the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse, Silver Lake Harbor, and Spencer’s Woods, where Blackbeard met his end just offshore. All participants who make it to the end will receive a finisher medal, and water and snacks will be available prior to the race so that participants can fuel up before hitting the course. Held every year in the spring, when the weather is refreshing and cool, this annual race is a great vehicle for exploring Ocracoke Island on foot from start to finish.
